In the Blind Auditions, an contestant performs about a minute of a song for the coaches, whose chairs are turned around so they cannot see the contestant, decide if he/she wants the singer on their team. If more than one coach wants the contestant, they have the choice to choose the coach. This goes on until each coach has 12 members on their team.
In the Battle Phase, two members from the coaches own team battle each other singing the same song. The coaches chooses between the two and the winner goes on to the Live Round.
During the second season, the show added a new stage. The coaches can save a member who has been eliminated. The coaches choose two eliminees and they face off and one gets the chance to go on.
In the final phase, the Live Performances, the contestants compete head to head and the public votes determine one of five acts from each team that will advance to the Final 8 while the coach chooses which of the remaining three acts comprises the other performer remaining on the team. In the final phase, the remaining contestants compete against each other in live shows for the public’s vote. The television audience and the coaches have equal say in deciding who moves on to the Final 4 phase. With one team member remaining for each coach, the Final 4 contestants compete against each other in the finale with the outcome decided solely by public vote.
